Whether MS or Sony will do better in the console wars (although not as well perhaps as Nintendo)I'm starting to think Bluray has won the High Def format wars. Just been in Virgin and they had a 4 wide display of HD-DVD stuff and a 12 wide Bluray display. With UK favourites like Casino Royale being BluRay exclusives, I can't see HD-DVD getting a foothold in the UK. That said, it would be nice to see a BluRay player that doesn't have a silly price tag appearing.

Any thoughts?

Much as I hate to admit it, I think blu-ray will win. I won't say that it has won yet, but hating Sony as I do, I'd much rather see HD-DVD win this one.

Oh, and icarus:

To be honest, my preference would have been for HD-DVD, but ANYONE winning is the best outcome. I just wish one or the other would obviously stand out, and then players would drop in price so we could all start enjoying high def films.

Betamax had far superior picture quality, and was Sony's format - I think that's where people are coming from.

Sony have a history of failed formats: Betamax, Minidisc, HiMD , UMD, memory stick. Although some worked ok, they still failed to be in use outside of Sony products.

Betamax did win the pro format wars though. I don't think it's going to be so much of a problem for them this time round though. If the PS3 is a success, then I'm sure BD will be a success. Even without it, it's pretty obvious that it's way ahead here in the UK.

Arguably, lack of LongPlay was the one technical missing feature of Betamax.

The trouble with Betamax was that Sony took a lot of trouble to design a good format for hi quality recording that they didn't take into consideration public perception and other practical matters.

I think with Blu-Ray things will be a little better.. after all they've taken care of storage issues now Smile Again, the more radical blu-ray design may be a drawback because it may be costlier to develop and may thus lose out in the end.

Personally I'm rooting for HD-DVD. The only advantage Blu-Ray has is higher capacity, and with multi-layered disc it becomes a moot point. HD-DVD's load faster, and use the superior H264 codec. Actually, H264 is so much better than DVD and Blu-Ray's MPEG2, that you should be able to actually store more video of the same quality on an HD-DVD than you can on a Blu-Ray, even though BR technically has more space.

Although I agree that having either one of them "win" would be preferable than the current situation.

Ok so blu-ray has more space and HD-DVD has more quality. We all know where that went.

You can use H264 with BluRay, although I think the initial players only supported MPEG2 - although they might be those Japanese BluRay recorders that were out years ago. No idea what most BDs are using right now though.

HD-DVD has Serenity - good enough for me.

Personally I don't think this war has to be resolved anytime soon. HD penetration isn't great enough for either to be any more than a niche market, for now at least.

The official standard for Blu-Ray as of now is MPEG2, if they changed it and started making players that supported H264, then I would not be so against Blu-Ray. HD-DVD still loads faster, but that's something that I'm sure would improve with time.

EDIT: Actually nevermind. According to Wikipedia new guidelines require BR players to support MPEG2, H264/AVC and VC-1/WMV3. So I guess it's not as bad as I thought (it's just currently no BR discs use anything other than MPEG2 since originally players were only required to playback MPEG2).

Although, HD-DVD's are apparently region free, which is nice.

I wondered about that, so just looked into it:

Blu-ray H.264 Movies:
Behind Enemy Lines
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
X-Men: The Last Stand
Speed
Glory Road
Gone in 60 Seconds
Eight Below
The Great Raid

I think all the players on the market must already support it, I wodner if the confusion comes from the fact thast BluRay existed as this weird recording product for a year and a half in Japan before the BD format was finalised?

In any case - weird Smile
