mine was to move on as fast as i could so i could develop the piloting skills nessicary inorder to kill the boss at zone 5... which i sucseeded in 1 try...

dont stay at zone 1 mining resorces till you maxed your tech.. if you relly on your super tech for the first 4 zones what are you gonna do when you dont have uber tech and good enough fighting skills to get your way through zone 5... save yourself the pain of geting worked in the last level... and keep moving once you win

As the game is now, hanging out in Zone 1 harvesting the resources in the Danger Node can give you a good amount of combat experience on its own, insofar as harnessing your piloting and fighting skills while you research.

On harder settings though, you can only research so far before you need to find other techs to research and build. On easy you can research quite far with the exception of the specials you have to get from the Xen in other Zones. Plus the further out you go zone-wise, the Danger Nodes are not placed right next door to the Xen outpost (as it should be) for quick and free repairs as it is in the first Zone.

When I played on easy, I primarily stocked up on some spare parts and a few extra hull types of Avengers and Devestators before moving on. Since the 1.4d update and the introduction of cargo pods, I found harvesting to be a lot more proficient cause depending on how many you place on your ship, you can stay out longer. If I had just been using my Prowler with its one or two cargo pods, I'd be making several trips back to the station to empty its hold.

I tend to be fairly meticulous -- I try to wipe out every guy, and harvest as much as I can in every zone, before I call it quits. I keep my tech toward the top of what's possible. Whenever I get into a new zone, I look for my crew and the Xenarch right away, and get everything researched quickly.

I have to admit, it felt kinda cheap playing on easy, and having a tweaked Devastator for the zone 2 little guys. The balance in Normal is pretty good, though -- the ship stays powerful enough for you to fight, but never gets overwhelming.

My wife plays a much faster style than I do -- she usually takes out the boss while there are still mining barges around.

Lately, I've been doing the follwoing:
Harvesting, going to the highest tech as soon as possible
Fighting miners until no other ones are created (leaving just 1 in the sector)
Killing the boss
Killing the smaller enemies
Leaving the miner so the snakes don't come, leavine me to mine in peace!
(And I create 20+ of every weapon, then engine parts, then hulls) so I have PLENTY of backups

The toughest part to all that though is hoping you can make it back in your escape pod or them 20 devestator hulls and spare parts don't amount to much...time to reload a saved game Smile

That much is true, especially when you're getting bounced around by five encircled space worms like a superball. It's like getting gangbanged, only less fun to watch.

you should *never* get encircled by 5 space worms. You should never run in to more than 2 at a time, and that should be rare.

They only come when every large ship has been cleared from a zone -- and this includes the ships that stop you from jumping out. So by the time you start seeing worms in normal nodes, you're guaranteed to be able to jump out cleanly if you can just get to your station, which you should be able to easily if you do it when the first worm shows up. And if you're in a worm node, just don't use ion cannons and you'll be OK.

I have yet to see more than 2 worms at a time outside of survival mode. My wife saw the packs of 3-4 once early on, and since then, we just don't give them a chance.

Part of my meticulous playstyle involves not losing many ships. My last game, I built exactly 3 ships, and had them all in my hangar at the end. The game before, I lost something like 3 whole ships -- once to the level 1 boss's middle stage (the rocks are *dangerous*), once to the level 3 boss, and once when I decided to keep fighting hordes of fighters with worms around rather than jumping out and back in. That was a mistake -- jump out if there are worms; don't fight them and get killed.

Usually by the time you've killed a lone worm in a normal node, the Aegis' jumpdrive should be charged and ready to get outta Dodge. If not, certainly by the time two show up and before they reach the station (depending on where they spawn in relation to it).

One of the things I also try to do, even if I have plenty of bomb bays, is conserve firing my nova bombs unless the stuff has really hit the fan. Also they make good covering fire for when your just about to get sucked in by the Aegis' tractor beam on landing. I ususally fire off a few rounds, long enough so that Aegis can orient its guns just right to hit some baddies as well too. Hopefully if my cargo hold isn't too packed and takes too long to unload, the Aegis should be able to hold its own long enough to empty it, and give me the launch order screen.

Quad plasma torpedos and twin missile drones. Just head for a large red blip on the grid and have at it. It's a spectacular sight indeed.

For me, I camp and research, then set up my extra ships as specialists. One is a dedicated Fighter, made with all around good fighting weapons and abilities, but little cargo space (Think of the Centurion from Wing Commander Privateer if you're old enough). Next up, my heavy hitter, using weapons that have more punch and a larger, more powerful load of missiles, and just as small for the cargo hold (WC-P veterans just remember the Orion), and lastly, my miner ship. It's got a HUGE cargo hold and just enough weapons to fend off the ocasional battle, specifically those Acid Trip Worms, but it's far outclassed by alien combat ships (Yes, I'm cheap, Privateer pilots can see this is modled after the Galaxy). This game play style seems to work fairly well.
