ok correction to hunter, we are not the contry with the highest sciside rate (and yes I cannot spell worth beans especially in the morning)
secondly the new enterprise is pushing it as far as they can.
I am from the us if anyone was wondering by the way so I can see where hunter is coming from. its not the way they girls are dressed, in fact I love the way they are dressed but as to being an issue its the placement of the ship and her holding it where she is holding it.

I know its kinda hard to understand us. from what I have heard guys actually hug out there if they do thats something beyond what americans will do. anyways amarican's are very weird and deverse, and yes if a girl in high school in most area's desses like they do in 90210 she gets sent home to get changed. anyways she could always hug it or you can ignore my suggestion becuase it is just a suggestion and not anything to worry to much about, also I found my way here from sluggy

UPN is a cable network show. Cable network is different, because you cannot get them without special equipment, they are not so tightly regulated. There are a number of pornographic channels on Cable/satellite stations. However, the 3 main stations, the ones that use actual radio waves, and thus can be picked up by any TV anywhere, no matter what, are ABC, NBC, and CBS.(Each has a checkable .com for more info) None of these would air the new adventures of StarTrek(it's why UPN was created to begin with!). I believe FOX also goes on radio waves, but they are still considered a very "crude" network(the home of "The Simpsons" for one thing).

It's also of note that the Networks have even recieved Congressional reprimands as of late(that is, the government, encouraged by the people, is deeming alot of stuff on TV inappropriate!)

I double checked, and in recent years, the world suicide rate outside of the us has increased 60%, overall, and a number of nations(possibly as many as 14) now have suicide rates higher than the US. However, formerly, the US had twice as many as any other country on earth. Sorry about the dated statistic.(For some reason, the former Soviet Socialist bloc has extraordinary numbers now.)

All I know last time I checked Japan had the highest sciside rate in comparison. yes they have a lower population but still with how much work they have to do involving there teenagers. heck if you put me into that I would have gone nuts doing that much school work. (I love there anime though)
anyways I get upn on non cable and I live in utah for a second note which generally speaking we are more thats indecent kinda thing. how old are you x? hehe and sorry about that earlier. I did think interesting when I first saw it but I didn't think any thing sexual about it.
I rather thought they were good. my question is, is there anyone else besides you x who thinks that it is to riska for america?
by the way frost I never imagened a woman holding something there to protect it, in my mind to protect it it would be more close to her heart but that is just my opinion.

If I wanted to share things like my age, I wouldn't be located at "..." Wink

For suicide rates, it's definitely Communist Bloc... top 10 are:
Lithuania, Russia, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia, Hungary, Slovenia, Ukraine, Khazakastan, and Finland

US ranks in around #15. Japan ranks higher, but not in the top 10.(I can't find the site I found the info on earlier, and WHO doesn't actually crunch the numbers, just collect them, so I just have raw statistics), but both are still much higher than the UK.

Very true, thanks for reminding me, it makes the world a more interesting place to have so many different people to talk to.

Anyway....this thread is taking some weird turns, especially all the disturbing talk about suicide rates. Isn't it Sweden where everybody jumps off a cliff during the winter? It stays permanently dark for 3 months of the year, so I guess it's understandable (or is it Iceland).

p.s. is "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" equally shunned by American free to air tv? It gets shown over here about 6pm specifically as a kids show (it does get cut a tiny bit admittedly). Sometimes it can be pretty scary/graphic. Thought I'd mention it to move us away from sex/suicide and into horror/violence. Wink

Buffy is on the WB, not one of the 3 main networks.

Finland might be the place you're talking about(I never heard this beyond "lemmings", which are animals, not people), as they're in the top 10 for suicide rates, yet they're not a communist bloc country.

Regarding relaxedness, remember visiting the States to see some friends. One of them we visited at her parents house in a nice New Jersey suburb. (They didn't even have pavements/sidewalks! Why leave your house without your car?) When we went to visit New York she prepped us like we were visiting a war-zone. I was really worried, but when we got there it did not seem unusually unsafe. I think there are quite a lot of people who watch Cops a bit too much. Still, then we went to Boston and everybody was much more relaxed.

The other thing I learned from my visit was that everything is huge. (Except, where we went, the hills. It was amazingly flat. The only things holding up the sky were the masses of power-lines.) I'm not surprised that TV broadcast across the whole gigantic nation is incredibly watered down. It doesn't necessarily reflect the morality of all or even most US citizens: it's just what elicits least complaints.

The reason I find most of this quite interesting is that we still get films cut when they are released on DVD in the UK (I'm not talking about when a studio agrees the cuts for a PG rating - I mean seriously borderline 18 films that the BBFC cuts to get an 18 rating) when (I'm pretty sure) they aren't cut in the US.

Then again legal drinking age is still 21 isn't it? whereas it's 16 in the UK (or is that the age of consent and drinking is 18? anyway, one of the two: it's still lower)

your drinking age is really low. here it is 21 also to go see a rated r you have to have an id that shows you are atleast 17. also you do not understand new york very well, it is a very very dangerous place but it does not seem like it is your problem. you would be amazed at all the crime and death in that city.

Our drinking age (UK) is 18, which appears to be the modal average: See here.

Okay, I was curious, so I did some looking up. I found these:
  1. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0004902.html
  2. http://www.scotland.gov.uk/stats/bulletins/00157-18.asp
Bear in mind the former measures per 100,000 inhabitants, the latter per 10,000 inhabitants. In 2000, New York had 3,600 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants, and (if you add them up) 945 violent crimes per 100,000 inhabitants. In 2001, Glasgow had 13,980 crimes per 100,000, and 1,220 "non-sexual crimes of violence". Now these figures probably aren't measuring quite the same thing, and aren't even for the same year, but they are not dissimilar. The point is that I am not afraid to walk the streets of Glasgow, and I am small and pants at fighting. I barely even think about the chance of being affected by violent crime. But it seems that (at least some) people are scared to walk the streets of New York alone, and their behaviour is strongly influenced by the risk of crime. I believe that such fear is disproportionate to the actual risk.

Wow. That was off-topic.

My apologies to the tourism board of Scotland. (Don't make me find the figures for London.)

Weeble.

But what if you live there for 50 years? Suddenly, you have a total of 180,000 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants. You're likely to be involved in two crimes over the course of your life. And, you have a 1/2 chance of being involved in a violent crime.

Of course, the numbers don't exactly work like that, but it does make you feel less safe in New York.

Check out:
http://bjsdata.ojp.usdoj.gov/dataonline/Search/Crime/State/statebystaterun.cfm?stateid=33

You'll note this shows that 1 in every 38 New Yorkers were assaulted in 2001. Worse yet, for 15 consecutive years of the 36 shown, 1 in every 18 New Yorkers were assaulted!!

To imagine this better, take 2 normal dice(6-sided ones). There's 36 possible combinations of numbers. Roll them 15 times. For every 3+4 7 you get(you get a total of 7, a 3 on 1 die, a 4 on the other), you've been victimized.

Pretend you're a family, and try this 4 times(4 sets of 15), and then decide how safe it sounds.

EDIT: For my little demonstration, 2 of my 4 family members were victimized once! Also, I should point out that this is where the reputation came from... now it's about as safe as getting a pair of 1's ("snake eyes").
