Seeing as nobody has posted this yet I guess I will. Nintendo has announced the name for the revolution, it is now the "Wii". I'd like to borrow a joke from a gamespy newsletter here and say they must have been on some serious Wiid when they thought of this. There is a little flash movie (and a rather lame attempt, in my opinion, to explain the name) at http://revolution.nintendo.com |

I like the new name. It's cute, eye-catching and different.
Nintendo are trying to hook the non-gamers with this, not the hardcores. The hardcores have decided whether to buy it or not a long time ago. A name won't alter their opinions. But mum, dad and the old grandparents need a name that doesn't sound intimidating. In the eighties, they introduced the NES, making it non-threatening by designing it to look like a toy rather than a machine. They're basically doing the same now, but with the name.
Also, it's fun to say. Weeeeee!
EDIT: And those gamers who HAVEN'T decided, will decide when they see the games out for it. |

I agree, Nintendoes excuse is that its easy to remember and stands out from the crowd.
Unfortunatly they are right about it, This is really going to hurt the ammount of people who will take this seriously.

Oh no. It's the Invasion Of The Stupid Wii Jokes. Seriously, I'd thought I would escape that here. I was wrong.
It's kind of interesting to observe that name etching itself into the brains of the impressionable internet crowd. Sure, you think it's stupid now, but all this furore is only serving to deeply burrow the name into your skulls, making it nigh on unforgettable. You'll only forget the Wii the day you forget your own names.
We'll see how things go. |

You have to admit that Nintendo is rather brave coming out with a name like that. But I think that letting the name out this early before market will help reduce the number of pee jokes by the time it's out as it'll get old quick. Personally, I think the name is dumb, but it does the job they want it to.
In other news, I can't seem to find any reasoning on their part as to why the controllers look like tv remotes. Anyone have any idea? It doesn't make sense to me from an ergonomic standpoint. |
