I'd just like to spend a second plugging my new project on sourceforge - a game called...
War Pong
Basically its pong where you can shoot each other, and the paddles get larger or smaller. Input is welcome (and I'd like to know how I can make it better). It's programmed in Blitz Basic (an archaic cousin to Blitz 3D, but I can't afford the latest iteration, Blitz Max)
Get it at http://warpong.sourceforge.net.

I haven't seen that before, so you can't say I copied it. (Well, you can, but it doesn't have a particulary valid point). And mine doesn't work exactly like that.
And if everything has already been though of, then its impossible to make something original anyway.
For some reason I get really defensive when I feel like I've been proven wrong... just ignore my rambling.
And lastly, why not concentrate on the execution instead of the concept?
edit: don't do that, it will make it seem worse... |

That's the general idea behind the "philosophy" Icarus is referring to. There's no point in trying to do anything new because everything has already been said and done a thousand times before.
It's completely wrong, of course, seeing as how there's constantly completely new patents being filed and completely new books being written. Before Vampirates, there hadn't been any books published that concerned the concept of Vampires and Pirates combined in one, for example.
Of course, then you could say that those two ingredients in themselves aren't anything new, so even that's not original. But if you go that way, then nothing that was ever made was new. We base everything we do off of SOMETHING. I can't imagine that anything has ever been said or invented that was completely and purely original. We've been putting two and two together to end up with one for ages. It's like reproducing. We take this old thing, and that old thing to create a new thing. It's how it works. Then you take that new thing and another new thing. |

Yeah, it's rubbish - Nobody has been to Mars yet for a start.
Besides: "Bad artists copy. Great artists steal." - Pablo Picasso. |

Is this a philosophical debate or a game debate?
I suppose it can be both.
But if it is, can we have a little about the game?
And I suppose since I'm not copying or stealing I'm a terrible artist. |

No i was saying that if you manage to think of an idea there is a chance that someone else has already thought of it.
So you shouldn't worry about being original and just make whatever you think is cool.
"If someone has a similar idea then well **** him my idea is probably better"- Is the attitude you should have. |

I just uploaded an update - a reasonably big one. The gameplay is still the same but everything is now made up of proper graphics. Some of them ain't great (like the paddles) but I really like some of them (like the background). Although I probably should have done something about the make-your-eyes-bleed factor of the title screen. Go have a look (I updated the screenshot so you don't have to download it if you don't want to). |

I just released another version.
And if you'd like me to shut up here, then tell me where I can get a decent audience. Because I'd like to have more than.... (checks) 17 downloads. |

Does that mean us Grammar Nazis get to have a field day on Mr Robot? |

Yes! and in fact, we'd like you to dance on our asses as far as grammar is concerned!. It might be possible to make the conversation file available as a separate download in beta - although I'm not actually sure whether that's possible (because conversation is pulled out of many places) - I'll look into it.
Hopefully it won't be as bad as Starscape V1 - we were quite drunk when we proof read that |
