Curse those cargo bays! Everything's going nicely. I'm building new turrets for the Aegis because I'm in Zone 4 and the old ones don't look like they'll cut it. Having wiped out the enemies in the node, I put away my devastator and fly out in my surprisingly nippy cargo-bay laden avenger to scoop up the minerals. After a while a diamond-shaped jump-inhibitor warps in with a bunch of ships right next to the Aegis!

I run home as fast as I can, knowing that the tiny blasters on the avenger won't do the job. I dock with the Aegis and... wait for my huge pile of minerals to be carefully sifted, sorted, arranged and stored before I can take out the devastator. The Aegis is ground slowly to gravel while my precious gem collection is gently transferred into her dessicated husk. When the devastator finally gets out it can't quite clear the area before she is no more. Take heed: cargo bays are dangerous!

I thought the game was...paused...when...unloading...minerals.

Oh well, it creates a new balance feature.

Yea, time only pauses when the hold is emptied and you get your hanger menu/jump drive info for Aegis. I usually end up in situations like that putting everything I just made into repairs to Aegis.

You're still mining in Zone 4? By Zone 4, my strategy mostly involves "mining wrecks". I blast something into wreckages, loot its shattered corpse, and head back to the Aegis while crapping out bombs and plazmissiles to unload and reload.

He was probably working on some major research/build project at the time. In the new difficulty levels, you can't just be done with all research by zone 2 (which is a big shock to me and my typical immediately-get-engine-and-generator-4 tactic

what level turrets u have in zone 4 (level 1ns ?? lol)

Yes, they were perhaps a bit sub-standard. Having finished the game on Hard a patch or two ago, I just wanted to hurry through and see what had changed. This time I'm just playing normal and focusing on progression through the levels as fast as I can. Unfortunately less exciting research like turrets, shields, and even ions all fell by the wayside. Maybe I should splash out on turrets now.

I'm a bit of a wimp, because since the game lets me, I hang out in zone 1 until I've gotten most of my research done, spares built, then I move to the next zone. Smile

I do like the cargo pods, they really make the difference when using a devestator with 12 or so while mining a Danger Zone. Sometimes though I forget to swap those out when I go into combat hehe

So you must be playing on "easy" mode then - tsk!

Yes, wimp/easy mode.

Or one of my favorites from back in my Doom/Wolfenstien days I think they had a "Please don't hurt me" mode instead of saying easy. I like that one better Laughing

I suppose there's a reason for easy mode beyond knowing that you're not playing it. My instincts deny it, but intellectually I can imagine a world where there is no stigma in playing the easy mode. Having observed my friends, I can certainly say that "Super Puzzle Fighter" and "Puyo Puyo" could use a "Help me, I'm colour-blind!" mode, while "Dancing Stage: Euromix" needs to have an "I lost a leg in the war" mode. I wonder if "being rubbish at games" will ever be considered a genuine disability?

I like working my way up through the different modes of play to see what's different. Don't let easy fool you though, while you benefit from researching some things early with it, I still have a tough time in places, for instance with the magma snakes...those things book now!

I have no idea if they act the same on different modes of play, but I'm finding them quite challenging just on easy.

i wish in hard mode the enemys ships were realy truly dangerous... like in zone 1 thoes fighters should be trying to out manover you as well, (drones to remain realistic shouldent cause there drones and is dumn Razz )

hehe i find that in games like this if you just stay at the end of a level and reaserch anything (im not talking stratigy games here) then you wont develop the combat skills, what are you goping to do when your maxed out tech is JUST good enough to deal with the most advanced enemies and you havent learend the best ways of fighting... i mean your always geting better, and every hard level you progress through incresses your skill that much more, so when you feal your not ready for the next level and should stay back, rember how fun will it be when ur pullin out ur hair at the end of the game cause u cant really on your super technology to make bad guys go BOOM?

(words of , wisdome?, from a truly confused mind)

My hang up isn't so much my skills at fighting as it is of running out of supplies sometimes, especially when the enemy gets thickly concentrated in the last few zones, its kinda harder to mine resources and fight Smile

Now if there were more salvagable items from killing smaller enemies like the drones or those larger escorts of theirs (even if its just inferior stuff mostly, and not necessarily drops all the time, but some of the time), perhaps I'd be in Danger Zones less for harvesting and I could be recycling stuff more as I research and fight.

Everyone who plays finds their own balance but if I ran out of supplies deep into zone 5, I might have ended up deciding to retreat to a better zone to finish up anyhow. Other problems I sometimes have is I have enough supplies, but run out of fighters or I miss my chance when one of mine dies to scoop up all the stuff I lost from it which in essense the whole thing is a big circular endeavour...mine, make supplies, build ships, then they all die or stuff is lost, rinse and repeat.

Its not a complaint, its just the way the game is and how I'm currently playing.

Someone really should bring back the Old School difficulty levels. There used to be about 5-7 and all with funny names. Who can forget "Thou'st needith a Wet Nurse"(Heretic) or "Come Get Some"(Duke Nukem 3D)?
