I've mentioned middle core before, but some people are trying to define it, here's my take:
1. let players save anywhere, allow zero penalty retries or cater to ~5mins play chunks, don't expect us to remember everything that's happened previously - we only have short amounts of random time for playing and need to fit gaming in around other activities.
2. games should cost $10 to $30 max - we have other commitments.
3. reasonably low spec graphics, there's nothing wrong with 2d - we don't have the cash for high end gear, we aren't slaves to graphics.
4. single player games are our staple diet - easier to pick up and put down than multi player.
5. Coop play on one screen is important - lets family and friends play along.
6. Flexible multi player only - anonymous log in, jump in and out, friends lists, messaging, free to play. We are interested if it fits in with our chaotic life style.
7. Casual games with depth - these other points push us towards casual games, but we like ones with a bit of meat like Puzzle Quest and Bookworm Adventures.
8. Games don't need to be over a Gig in size - downloading and installing multi Gig games takes too long and eats up space.
9. Not just mature content - we like games we can play with our kids and we are too old to be impressed by gratuitous sex & violence for its own sake. We are old enough to appreciate intelligent mature content.
10. No subscriptions - one time fees, sensible use of adverts and the odd micro transaction are ok, but we can't justify regular monthly bills.

I can subscribe to that. Except not, you know, subscribe. Obviously. |

Sounds right to me. I'd definitely include the point made at the other end of the link (in the graphics bit) that a game shouldn't require the latest version of Windows, either, though. Vista doesn't provide anything I require over Win2k, and I'm not about to pay MS $100s just so that I can play a $10 game. |
