Which do you prefer and why?

Blasters.
Blaster-3 is my favorite.
High power, low energy, low weight, slow moving wall of death. The low weight lets me stack up on the cargo pods. The low energy lets me mine while shooting. Since I like to mine most of the game, I use blaster-3's whenever I can.
Beams come too late to be my favorite. |

paired blasters and ions, or beams and ions, depending on the application and stage of the game. I haven't yet tried beams with blasters -- that seems somewhat redundant. |

I said the big 3 (Beams, Blasters, Ions) as they are the 3 infinite ammo things also i only added missles as some people don't even have infinite weapons on they crafts. |

Beams. You can aim them while shooting and sweep through weaker enemier or 'roids. Also, the beam appears instantaneously, unlike the other two.
Of the other two, blaster win due to higher damage. With ions everything seems to take awful lot of hits... Blaster charge is nice too. |

beams. use less energy than their ion and blaster equivalents, and more punch. charge up lightning can be described as HOLY ****. |

I rather liked the blasters at first - that charge up attack was great. Then the enemies started getting tougher. In Zone 2 I got some new weaponry - ion things that bounce around.
I hated them. They are useless in mining (often bouncing around so much they hit elements) and seem less powerful in combat. And no charge up attack! I found myself sticking with blasters.
Those drones were useful. Blaster drones are near useless by this stage but the beam drones were nice. And then I got nova bombs. Basic ones are nothing special but level 3 bombs are hilarious fun!
When I got to Zone 5 I had a problem. I was faced with a choice of two primary weapons, one of which was too weak (blaster) and the other was both weak and difficult to aim (ion beams). I didn't have any ion beams - they were something I'd find in this zone - so my ship was woefully ineffective. What could I use?
My solution - turn everything upside-down and use plasma torpedoes as primary weapons! Six of those firing at once were lethal, and with nova bombs as secondary weapons, I had a lethal combination. Which is good, as I needed the power to keep mining until I researched and built those Beam Lasers.
I thus think Beams are best, but the plasma torpedo comes a close second. |

Heh, I did both. I found that attatching blasters 3/4 to my front two pods and ion cannons 3 (everything pre-3 stinks) to my side pods gives me the best mix. With 4 blasters pointing foward it's just overkill, as 2 can kill virtually anything instantly (especially with 2 ion blasts and 2 beam drones). The side ions are superb when fighting annoying buggers like the ship-spawning armored mothership. Only disadvantage is it can be a real mess in mining. |

yay my thread is still functioning! and
Ion beams did suck. on level 2, they didn't even fire strait! so you had to fly beside them and fire. also i found a prowler with all space other than engine and generator filled with nova bombs and bomb bays can kill about everything. you just fly in, drop "The Big Bomb" And then fly out, vaporising everything in the middle. And
you get Beam drones before beam tech, whats up with that? |

I personally like a good mix of weaponry depending on the task at hand.
If it comes down to dealing with massive swarms, or combatting something with little plating, I can find no better source of love than Ions backed by missiles.
When it comes time to pinpoint-target, it's 2-4 center-mounted beams flanked by blasters for support. |
