So i spill some of my ideas into the pool, maybe we get something nice new toys to play with.

Explosives expert: quite a sneaky guy, cant be spotted by vehicles, only infantry, when standing still, only from close range.
Ability 1: Plant explosves when near to an enmy Vehicle encampment.
This bomb can be exploded from the commander (you) at any time necessary (via a button, even when teh Demoman is dead)
Such explosives can be defused/seen by own demomans.

When not found it heavily damgages vehicles, kills walkers

Ability2: Landmine
An anti Vehicle Landmine, costs some time to lay, costs much amme/can only lay a low number per game.
Deadly to vehivles, moderatly to walkers

Walking mine: infantry sized robot (6 legged?) with a huge blast pack on its back, can burrow itself in the ground, no armor, is quickly detonated even by light gunfire, moves very fast,is all terain compatible
Can kill light tanks or a group of infantry with one blast.

Drone Tanks/ planes/ boats/walkers: similar to their crew operated counterparts , get a slight boost in aiming and sight, regeerate themselves slowly. Very vulnerable to EM weapons.

EM Tank: Hades equipment, cannon replacemt? Fires a burst of microwaves at its target, non ballistic. fries infantry, kills the crew of crew operated vehicles, so they can be taken over by own men, destroys Drone vehicles.
Long burst fire, medium range, long reload time.

Amphibic/hover transports/tanks ?

SGEs (Strategic gun emplacements), Vehicles that can anchor themself in the ground and become a building of some sort (like in the BI series), stationary until the end of the round, but highly useful, like becoming shield gens or long range artillery, if in transit mode highly vulnerable.

Bioweapons ? deadly spores, or mutagenic animals/aliens like some cloacking beast that eats infantry or the leach from EoD ?

Napalm based weaponary, unlike flamethowers it burns quite some time and what it doenst kill it denies access to a certain area, there coud be traps with this.

Vehicles that place a certain number of sentry guns, perimenter guards, that are Ki controlled, and can maintain them and pick them up again?
Like the sentries of tribes2?

Well thats the first pack , now my fingers hurt :p
I shall return later

Some of the ideas are interesting, but I think you're kinda missing the point of Battlescape's unit system. You're given basic templates (8 at last count, see here) that you can customise with specialised equipment, depending on the type of unit. This kinda limits just how far-out you can make units, to a degree, but there's still a lot of room for cool customisation. Demolition charges could be interesting, although I think mine laying equipment would probably be more likely to make it in since there's more opportunities for their application. Depends on how big a role buildings play in the game, really.

It was stated somewhere on the boards that all units will be able to dig themselves in, 'entrenching', to provide bonuses (cover, possibly firepower), so no worries there.

Mechanical pilots are unlikely...perhaps a targeting computer upgrade of some sort for vehicles? The Talos is getting a handheld targeting laser (why it has to be handheld, I don't know...), so this wouldn't be much of a stretch. Much the same with weapons, it's probably quite easy to set up weapons with less or greater effect versus certain unit types, so I'm sure we'll see things like flamethrowers, vehicle stunners and more.

Amphibious units (with an actual inflation collar or something similar, not just capable of fording shallows) would be very neat. If they don't make it into this game, then hopefully they'll appear in an expansion.

I just want to make sure everyone understands something:
If you read or see something in the Dev diary, that doesn't mean it is definitely going to turn up in the final game. Of course, if we are working on it, then there's a high chance it will happen, but when you get further into development and start play balancing it's inevitable that things will be dropped/changed/added.

I just noticed that people are starting to say things like 'Battlescape IS going to be like ..., or have feature X'. Most games companies are pretty wary of doing such a detailed development diary as we are doing, for the above reason - but we wanted to try doing it in a totally honest way: you get to see everythying - mistakes included. So, I just want to keep pointing out that it is a work in progress - everything is subject to change.

If the 8 units are barebone systems its enough:

1 light infantry
1 heavy infantry
1 light tank
1 heavy tank
1 supertank
1 walker
1 small aircraft
1 large aircraft

With a good customization system you can buil ANY force you like from this.
One of the best custom unit games, master of orion II didnt have to many chassis either, ther were only scout, frigate, cruiser, titan, and death-star, with the power rising exponentially, and you could build ships for any purpose you liked, due to the massive amount of weapons and other devices, for example cuiser hull:
Cloaked boarding ship (phase cloak, many boarding pods and PD weapons) You fly close to the enemy uncloak and launch the pods from close range, so he cant take them down, voila, ship is yours.
BH disabler
Fast outfit, good shields and bh generator, you speed in fire bh on enemy and speed outm, waiting while he is dead in three turns (bh effect ends if your ship is destroyed)
Missile cuiser, you could ahve anti misslies, long range, planet bombarding, everything.
And not much chassis!
Ah, thats great
*runs off to play MOOII*

Well, it gets a bit repetitive typing 'so far, it looks like X feature will be in the game', etc, every time you're trying to talk about unit features... :)

Speaking of which, no September dev diary. I was disappointed...but the hint of an announcement has my curiosity piqued.
