In the UK the PC shelf is shrinking. There are quite a few casual titles, but they tend to be things you've never heard of selling for $2. Seems things are different in the US.

PC shelf space at Target is healthy, but not so hardcore any more.

1/3 kids and adventure games - adventures are making a come back! Admittedly, more Nancy Drew than Kings Quest.

1/3 hardcore - but dominated by Blizzard and Sims. Perhaps Spore and it's expansions will soon join in the domination?

1/3 casual - but not super cheap weird stuff like in the UK, all the top selling downloadable titles and they are holding their $20 price tag! Portals we've spoken too have said any casual game getting >1million downloads is going into retail easily. High download numbers means lots of visibility which means free advertising and name recognition (shops love that).

I usually only visit game stores to buy games (only go somewhere else if I know it's going to be cheap) but from what I see things here aren't quite as bad as they are over there (if however you wander into the Wii or DS sections, try looking on the bottom shelf... they might have something worth playing down there).

Since when is The Sims hardcore, or even close? Half the stores I go into have their own Sims section...

I suppose even if it is casual games, anything keeping the PC alive as a gaming platform has to be good (maybe not completely but better than nothing).

Anyway I can see one game worth playing in that photo you posted... can you?

Ding ding ding, let's see what he wins...

You win... a correction! Puzzle Quest's name has both words capitalised.

It seems to have gotten worse. One of the bigger places had people queuing out the door to exchange old games for second hand replacements - nice one for the shop, shame for the developer. Console stuff only, they had about 20 PC games buried at the back.

Further down the road there was a smaller independent game store and he didn't stock PC games AT ALL.

p.s. Puzzle Quest = Crack on the DS, go buy immediately if you haven't had a go yet. There is a PC demo, but it just feels more at home on the DS to me.

I've played the PC demo and it's the PC version of... some lesser drug. Haven't seen the DS version in stores much here, so I'll probably import it sometime.
