3d for the sake of easily updatable content [with a oh so small size] not that starscape has this kind of problem.
Oh and pixel shadders + startscape would be a dream |

I like 2D... And speaking of beautiful 2D games...
It is indeed fine either way, I think.
All is up to you, Fost/Mark. |

ok as to my thoughts about starscape 2d vs 3d id go with 2d cause it looks great and who need to change it hey if people want a 3d game then make it a graphical camera you know like a top down view a 3d view(kinda like diablo 2 or titan quest) maybe even a cockpit view if you want to go that far |

It's a though question, some things will work better in 3D and some won't. I agree that antialiasing will avoid a lot of the hard edges that 3D will introduce. I'm not sure wether the very small ships will look as good as they do now.
Advantages of using 3D for Starscape could be:
Resolution independent
Better animations for some objects (for example: rotation of asteriods will be smoother)
More complex animations (large bosses could have all sorts of moving parts)
Improved lighting (explosions actually light ships)
Cool destruction effects (shooting parts of a boss, but to be honest this could be done in 2D also)
Ability to go more closeup to ships / zoom in. |

- 3D.. top down shooter? Or real 3D like.. er.. freelancer or homeworld? |

It would still be a top-down shooter but rendered using 3D models, dynamic lighting etc. So gameplay would still be essentially 2D. |

Personally I would prefer 3d gameplay with 2d Graphics. |
